Built in 1868, this is said to be the oldest house in Old Sherwood Town. It was built by J.C.Smock when he was approximately 20 years old, a year before he was married to Mary Ellen. In 1889, the house was moved to the geographical center (Block 5, Lot 6) of Old Sherwood Town. Smock House represents an important tie, not only to Sherwood’s founder, but to Sherwood's heritage. The House's architectural style, featuring twin front doors, is fairly commonplace in the part of Ohio that Smock's adopted family came from: The Virginia Military District. This District was the earliest federal land grant in American History, provided specifically for British and Hessian soldiers who defected to the American side during the Revolution. There is no evidence tying the Hall family to the Revolutionary War period. However, it is still impossible to look upon Smock House without being reminded of the overwhelming significance of land grants in the building of the West.
On November 1, 2003, Smock House was moved to Park Street and is now located next to Morback House as a component of the Sherwood Heritage Center.
