17. Old Elementary School

Photo of Sherwood Elementary School before Top Storey was Removed. The present day Clyde Hopkins Elementary School was named for the man who was Principal of the school that once existed at the corner of Third and Pine. Built in 1911, it was an example of what the Saloon License Fee could provide. Today, after service as the Sherwood Grange and then as a privately owned store, the building has been purchased by the City of Sherwood. The white frame building seen here possesses a second and a third storey.

The site of the old Clyde Hopkins School was probably chosen for its accessibility to the farm community surrounding Old Sherwood Town. During the last half of the Nineteenth Century a wagon road from Lafayette to Oregon City went through here. Another piece of it crosses Cipole Road, Herman Road, bound for Oregon City. This building replaced another, much plainer schoolhouse that was moved South of the railroad tracks in 1911, where it served as a livery stable for many years.
