Baseball in Sherwood Oregon U.S.A.

From Interviews by Clyde List

Joe Werre (2/4/77): I wanted to tell you about Sherwood, about the ball teams. There was three families that had a ball team. There was the Bakers and the Todds and the Parretts. There was three Bakers in it. There was Chick and Del, and I can't remember the third one. The Parretts was Oliver and Elmer, I believe it was. Oliver was a pitcher. He was about six foot tall. They made up seven players. And they got one clear from Portland, see? The ball game: They had it on the Sunday afternoon and they charged two bits. That was cheap. And they had good players! Sherwood had the best team in their league, see? They played, like, Forest Grove and Newberg and McMinnville and --Beaverton didn't have any-- I believe Sheridan had one. There was around five or six teams. Sherwood had a nice ball park. Beautiful ball park. They had to play in Sherwood with some of these other teams, see what I mean? There was seven players. There was Freddie Parrett, he was catcher. He was kind of short and heavy set. And then there was... One of the Parretts, he was the umpire for the whole league, see? He had to umpire every Sunday. He had a hardware store, I think, up at Dundee. That's where he come from. But that almost made the whole baseball: Those three families, see? And they was good players. I want to tell you, they was outstanding. And the saloons done a bigger business. There was a lot of soaks around there. It was terrible. When they got a dollar, they drank it up, see?

NOTE: DEL BAKER later played for the Detroit Tigers.
