"
Our first electric lights came in 1908, F.J.Epler put in a small plant in the building now used as a garage on the G. Hanke lot. It was operated with a large gaseline engine, and only furnished lights in the evening to 10 o'clock. As activities increased in the town, the people subscribed to a fund to continue the service until midnight.... " Shortly after starting the light plant Mr. Epler contracted with the city to furnish water for residential and fire protection, taking over the sustem previously installed by the city for fire protection. Mr. Epler put down a small drilled well where the present pumping plant is located, operated the pump with a gasoline engine, pumping the water into two large steel tanks mounted on a platform in the building, those forcing the water into the mains. The service proved to be very unsatisfactory until the city took over the system and made very substantial improvements. " --J.E.Morback, Sherwood Valley News, April 27, 1939. |
