9. Veteran's Memorial
By the time the First World War rolled around, the national press focused some attention on soldiers recruited from the Pacific Northwest. Would Oregon boys feel as committed to the American vision as their more established cousins to the East? Like the American flag mentioned above (Site 8), the veterans' monument resolves the issue conclusively. The monument was rededicated on November 11, 2000. On that date, the town's oldest public space was renamed Veteran's Park. The names on the monument belong to servicemen who lived within as well as without the city limits of Sherwood, illustrating once again Sherwood's close relationship with the countryside that surrounds it. |
