Railroad towns usually did not supply themselves with a public square. Recreational space had to be acquired as time went by. Sherwood's ball field was purchased for the town by Fred Colfelt. The pine trees that grew to a considerable height at the East end of the row of cannery buildings could be seen from Old Sherwood Town until they were cut down in the early 1970s. Sherwood's first baseball team, The Sherwood White Sox, was organized in 1912 by Del and Chic Baker. Del Baker's name may be found on the website for the Detroit Tigers. Del was not the only Sherwood kid that went on to play in the major leagues. "Clarence Podbielan, Sherwood, left last week for Pensacola, Florida, where he is to resume his baseball training with the Brooklyn Dodgers." [Sherwood Valley News, March 13, 1947.]
