31. The Old Sherwood Hotel.

Except for the bank, no building was more important to the economic life of a railroad town than its hotel. In fact, the building also served as a bank during its lifetime. The bank safe may still be found in the wall behind the coffee counter. This building was constructed by the Colfelt brothers, replacing a wooden structure that was erected by C. George Reisner, Sherwood's first mayor. The Town Council held its first meetings at the Reisner Hotel. The Town Minutes reveal the tension that filled the air in this hotel during Reisner's one year term in office. Reisner's most objectionable act was to vote in favor of the first liquor license in Sherwood history: his own. By the end of 1893, Reisner had become the first Mayor in Sherwood history to face a recall petition and to exercise the Mayoral veto power. Democracy, like every other aspect of the Sherwood Vision, came hard.
