24. The Robin Hood Theater

This building was constructed by Anthony Schultz in 1947 in spite of a serious shortage of nails, owing to production problems following the War. There were two other movie houses— Tigard's Joy Theater, Newberg's Francis Theater— that worked together with the Robin Hood Theater to compete for films in the Portland market. The 1938 Errol Flynn Robin Hood was seen here, a movie based on the de Koven & Smith comic opera, Robin Hood, America's top theater attraction during the 1890s. It was Hollywood's version that helped encourage locals to dye their long johns Lincoln green and actually walk around in public looking like that.
