Sheriff with Children. Sheriff: And so, Robin Hood and the Stranger meet on a narrow bridge. Robin Hood aims his bow and arrow at the stranger. He tells him to get out of the way. What does the stranger do? Child: He runs away? Sheriff: No. He doesn't. He stands still. He looks straight into Robin Hood's eye and calls Robin Hood a coward. "Look at me. All I have is a quarter staff to fight with." he says. And so what does Robin Hood do? Child: He shoots him? Sheriff: No. He doesn't. He agrees that only a coward would shoot a stranger, and Robin Hood always fights fair! He puts down his bow and arrow and gets a quarter staff of his own. And then they fight. And who wins the battle? Child: Robin Hood? Sheriff: No. He doesn't. He loses the battle! All of a sudden, he's sitting in the creek! The stranger's up on the ridge laughing at him! And so is that the end of the story? Child: ?? Sheriff: No. It isn't. Because Robin Hood has one more weapon. Not his sword. Not his bow and arrow. Not his quarter staff. But his deer horn. As soon as he blows his horn, the Merry Men arrive. The Stranger is going "Oh oh! I'm out numbered!" And so what does he do? Child: He runs away? Sheriff: No! Robin Hood calls him a hero. He says, "What is your name?" When the Stranger says "John Little." Robin Hood says, "From now on you will be called "Little John! We'll have a ceremony to change your name." Child: Is Maid Marian in the story? Sheriff: Yes. Maid Marian hates fighting. She only cares about someone who gets a new name. She thinks that only happens when you're a baby. And so she fixes up a baby gown and goes looking for the baby. All she finds is Little John. She says, "Oh well. I guess you're the baby." And so she dresses him up in baby clothes. And so what does Little John do then? Child: He gets mad? Sheriff: No! Because Little John is an Englishman and an Englishman would never say unkind things to a lady. That's when Robin Hood gets his sword and puts it in Little John's hand and tells him to keep it from now on. "You are a true Englishman. As gentle as you are bold!" he says. And so, you see children, the moral of the story is.... Lawman: [Pointing at the Sheriff] Stop that man! He's wanted for perjury in five States! Child: But that was a long time ago! He would not tell the truth to people like you because you were always asking where the run away slaves were hiding! Lawman: Doesn't matter. The law is the law and the law must be obeyed! |
